Australia's first nationally coordinated Census was taken on 2 April 1911. It contained 21 questions and revealed a population of 4 455 005 people. Many of these questions are still used today.

The Census of 1947 played an important role directing post-WWII Australia in the ares of migration and infrastructure, and from 1971 Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people were included in the offical population enumeration.

The Census is important for determining where schools and hospitals are needed, allocating federal funding to states and territories, and planning community services and facilities.

Continuing this fine tradition, the data from the 2011 Census will again be helping to chart the course of our nation's future.
