Theme Background:

This wonderfully crafted Koala coin is the first release in the new Australian Opal series. Showcasing Australian animals created in pure Australian opal, this series is sure to impress.

This delightful new series will feature eight coins in total, with two releases per year, featuring a nocturnal Australian Animal featured in Australian Opal. Each of the releases reflects the moon at all eight phases and features the Southern Cross and native flora surrounding the opal.

The koala is perhaps Australia’s most beloved and iconic animal. The cuddly koala ‘bear’ is not really a bear at all, but a marsupial. Protected by law, the koala inhabits trees and feeds solely on a diet of eucalypt (gum) leaves.

Like many Australian mammals, this unique creature is nocturnal and can sleep for approximately 18 hours a day. Struck by The Perth Mint from 1oz of 99.9% pure silver in proof quality, the coin is issued as legal tender under the Australian Currency Act 1965.

No more than 8,000 of these coins will be struck by The Perth Mint.

Design

The coin’s reverse incorporates an inner panel design of a koala in a gum tree, detailed in pure Australian opal. The outer panel of the coin depicts Eucalypt leaves and blossoms, a new moon and the Southern Cross – a renowned star group which is only visible in the Southern hemisphere.
