Theme Background:
This year’s Gemstone Edition from the Australian Lunar Series II celebrates the dragon, the fifth of the twelve animals associated with the ancient Chinese Lunar Calendar. In Chinese culture, people born in the Year of the Dragon - 1916, 1928, 1940, 1952, 1964, 1976, 1988, 2000 and 2012 - are regarded as confident, enterprising, independent, selfassured, brave and passionate. A superb gift or collectable, the coin is meticulously struck by The Perth Mint from one kilo of 99.9% pure silver in specimen quality. Issued as legal tender under the Australian Currency Act 1965, no more than 5,000 coins will be issued worldwide.
DESIGN
The coin’s reverse depicts a red dragon with a representation of a ‘pearl of wisdom’. The dragon has a stunning ruby set in one of its eyes. The Chinese character for ‘dragon’ and the inscription ‘Year of the Dragon’ also appear in the design with The Perth Mint’s traditional ‘P’ mintmark. The Ian Rank-Broadley effigy of Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II and the 2012 year-date are shown on the coin’s obverse.
