The Perth Mint is proud to announce the highly anticipated 2012 Discover Australia silver proof coin series.
With five new animal designs for 2012 the coins consist of: the Green and Gold Bell Frog, the Red Kangaroo, the Kookaburra, the Goanna and the Whale Shark.

The Whale Shark

Which is the world’s largest fish, yet despite its formidable size is considered harmless. Found in coastal waters and the lagoons of coral atolls and reefs, the upper body of the Whale Shark is blue-grey to brown in colour, with light spots. Boasting some 3,000 tiny teeth, the Whale Shark is a filter feeder, sieving food through its gills. This majestic creature was not discovered until 1828, although the species is actually millions of years old.

Struck by The Perth Mint from 1 oz of 99.9% pure silver in proof quality, each coin is issued as legal tender under the Australian Currency Act 1965.
The Perth Mint will release no more than 7,500 of these 1oz silver proof coins.

Design

The coin's reverse depicts a Whale Shark swimming through the colourful Ningaloo Reef. The inscriptions DISCOVER AUSTRALIA and WHALE SHARK, The Perth Mint’s ‘P’ mintmark and the 2012 year-date are also included in the design.

Each coin's obverse also bears the Ian Rank-Broadley effigy of Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II and the monetary denomination.
