The Perth Mint is proud to announce the highly anticipated 2012 Discover Australia silver proof coin series.
With five new animal designs for 2012 the coins consist of: the Green and Gold Bell Frog, the Red Kangaroo, the Kookaburra, the Goanna and the Whale Shark.

The Kookaburra

Which is one of Australia’s most recognisable birds found throughout mainland Australia. The bird’s white coloured plumage and brown facial stripe is distinctive, as is its loud laughing call. A territorial tree-dwelling kingfisher, the Kookaburra is believed to mate for life. Both the male and female partner share the incubation duties of their unhatched eggs, while other members in the family group later assist with the parenting responsibilities.

Struck by The Perth Mint from 1 oz of 99.9% pure silver in proof quality, each coin is issued as legal tender under the Australian Currency Act 1965.
The Perth Mint will release no more than 7,500 of these 1oz silver proof coins.

Design

The coin’s reverse depicts a Kookaburra perched on a tree branch against a coloured background scene of the Murray River at sunrise. The inscriptions DISCOVER AUSTRALIA and KOOKABURRA, The Perth Mint’s ‘P’ mintmark and the 2012 year-date are also included in the design.

Each coin's obverse also bears the Ian Rank-Broadley effigy of Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II and the monetary denomination.
