Theme Background:

From the awe inspiring opening ceremony to the sheer excitement of the competition, the London 2012 Olympic Games will feature thousands of athletes, 26 sports and 205 participating countries.

Australia has been represented at every Summer Games and all but four Winter Games in the modern era since 1896. Australia co-hosted the Summer Games in Melbourne in 1956 and hosted the incredibly successful games of Sydney 2000.

Originally, the ancient Olympic Games were held in Olympia, Greece, from the 8th century BC to the 5th century AD. The modern Games held under the auspices of the International Olympic Committee were first hosted in Athens in 1896. These Games brought together 14 nations and 241 athletes who competed in 43 events.

As the Olympic torch is lit, so will it ignite the hopes of all Australians, to hear again, the famous words uttered by Norman May, “Gold! Gold to Australia!”

These releases consist of;

• Three-Coin Set (10g 99.99% pure gold, 1/2oz 99.9% pure silver & 30mm Aluminium Bronze coin), with a limited mintage of only 750.

Each coin is issued as legal tender under the Australian Currency Act 1965.

Design:

The gold coin’s reverse portrays an Olympic athlete, holding the Australian flag aloft and standing on a podium. The design includes the Official Team logo and the inscriptions 2012 AUSTRALIAN OLYMPIC TEAM and GOLD! GOLD TO AUSTRALIA! GOLD!

The silver coin’s reverse portrays an Olympic hurdler, set against a coloured backdrop of Sydney’s Harbour Bridge and London’s Big Ben. The design includes the Official Team logo and the inscription 2012 AUSTRALIAN OLYMPIC TEAM.

The aluminium bronze coin’s reverse portrays the iconic Boxing Kangaroo, the Official Team logo and the inscription 2012 AUSTRALIAN OLYMPIC TEAM.

The obverse of each coin depicts the Ian Rank-Broadley effigy of Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II and the monetary denomination.
