Theme Background
Since the first release of the $1 Blackbeard Coin, this seafaring series on pirates has proved popular plunder for young collectors.
John Rackham (Calico Jack) was born in England in 1682 and was a moderately successful pirate in the Caribbean, whose alias reflected his fondness for striped calico breeches.
Charming and good-looking, Rackham is most remembered for the design of his Jolly Roger flag – a skull with crossed swords. He is also known for having two female crew members,
Mary Read and Anne Bonny, which was unusual at that time.
When Rackham’s ship was captured, the female pirates fought to the last, while their drunken shipmates surrendered feebly. Tried in Jamaica in 1720, Rackham and his men were hanged and posted in gibbets, but both women escaped death by claiming to be “with child”.
