Wildlife in Need Series

Focusing on five rare and endangered wild animals, this beautiful Wildlife in Need series showcases these amazing creatures in need of our care. This coin program aims to raise $49,750 charity funds for WWF-Australia.

Orangutan

The 2nd release in the Wildlife in Need series is the Orangutan.

The Orangutan is characterised by its ape-like shape, shaggy red fur, long arms and grasping hands and feet. This ‘man of the forest’ is now only found on the islands of Borneo and Sumatra in south-east Asia. The preferred mode of travel by the Orangutan is to swing from one tree to another, avoiding contact with the ground. However, once earthbound, the species moves on all fours, using its long arms and fists as leverage. At night the Orangutan makes a nest of vegetation to sleep in, with smaller nests made during the day for additional rest stops. The low reproductive rate of the female Orangutan and the long period taken for the offspring to reach maturity, leave the population highly vulnerable to environmental threats.

The destruction of habitats through commercial logging, forest clearance for oil palm plantations and agriculture, have contributed to this animal’s need for protection. In addition, uncontrolled fires and human exploitation present further challenges. It is more important than ever to safeguard the future of this well-loved species.
