Theme Background:
‘Treasures of Australia’ is a beautiful series featuring locket coins celebrating Australia’s abundance of natural riches. Struck from 1oz of 99.9% pure silver and 1oz of 99.99% pure goldin proof quality, the 2011 release features an authentic keshi pearl.
The Kimberley town of Broome became the home of Australia’s oyster fishing industry in the 19th century. Today it is renowned for ‘cultured’ South Sea pearls, the most sought-after in the world. Oysters create natural pearls by depositing layers of nacre over a grain of sand or other ‘intruder’ that settles inside their shell. Cultured pearls develop around a bead implanted by human hand. A traditional bridal gift, pearl is also the modern birthstone of people born in June.
The coin’s reverse portrays an abstract interpretation of Australia’s marine environment, one of the world’s richest sources of South Sea pearls. The coin also incorporates a transparent locket inlaid with mother of pearl framing a keshi pearl.
