Theme Background:
This fabulous release celebrates the Santa Maria and the voyage of explorer Christopher Columbus to the Americas.
The Santa Maria, or Santa Maria de La Immaculada Concepcion, was the largest of three ships used by Columbus on his first voyage (1492-1493). Columbus, under the patronage of Queen Isabella of Spain, was searching for a quicker trade route to the East Indies. Instead, he discovered the islands just off the coast of America, now known as the Bahamas. It was not until his third exploration that he landed on the mainland.
Although Columbus was not the first explorer to reach the Americas from Europe; the voyages of Columbus marked a milestone. Columbus opened up the New World to further exploration and colonisation.
