Theme Background

There’s a distinct buzz of excitement surrounding the third annual Young Collectors coin set from The Perth Mint.

The popular sub-brand aimed primarily at 8-to-14 year-olds is back with an outstanding release comprising nine Australian $1 coins portraying backyard bugs – from a beautiful butterfly to a bothersome blowfly!

Intent on inspiring young people to develop an interest in coins, the latest Young Collectors set comes in awesome packaging which also houses fabulous bonus items.

Parents and grandparents looking for a fantastic gift will also appreciate the educational information in the accompanying booklet, which includes a contribution from Dr Beth Mantle, Manager of the Australian National Insect Collection.

Struck from aluminium bronze, each $1 coin in the set is issued as Australian legal tender. Each coin is housed in a protective capsule which fits snugly into its recess in the illustrated presentation album.

Design

The reverse of each coin portrays one of nine bugs found in backyards around Australia:

  • Redback Spider
  • Ladybird
  • Bull Ant
  • Grasshopper
  • Birdwing Butterfly
  • Cicada
  • Blowfly
  • Dragonfly
  • Praying Mantis

The design on each coin also incorporates The Perth Mint’s ‘P’ mintmark.

The obverse of each coin depicts the Ian Rank-Broadley effigy of Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II and the 2010 year-date.

Presentation

The 2010 Australian Backyard Bugs $1 coin set is housed in a presentation album that is a work of art in its own right! The internal spread depicts an insect-eye view of a backyard that cleverly draws the viewer’s eye deep into the colour illustration to discover all nine featured bugs.

The album, which comes in a protective slip case, also contains the following items:

Information Booklet

Incorporating a Certificate of Authenticity, the Information Booklet explores the amazing world of bugs. What exactly is a bug? How do they grow? What benefit are they? Answering a myriad of questions like these, the illustrated Booklet has hints on how to collect bugs and includes a word from Dr Beth Mantle, an insect expert at the CSIRO, who describes her childhood passion for creepy crawlies.

Magnifying Glass

Perfect for examining tiny bugs and coin designs, a magnifying glass is integrated into the package.

Bug Stickers & Poster

There’s yet more fun to be had with colourful bug stickers and a wonderful poster portraying one of the prettiest and most beneficial of all insects - a ladybird.
