Theme Background
Born 150 years ago in Bohemia, Gustav Mahler was best known as a conductor. His first love, however, was composing. In the latter half of the 20th century, his technically-demanding but emotive works found relevance among a wider audience. Today, Mahler is regarded as one of the most important composers of all time.
During his life he wrote nine symphonies and a one major work for two vocal soloists and orchestra, as well as an impressive collection of songs. Many works provoked controversy, although the Munich premier of Symphony No. 8 in 1910, which featured a chorus of about 850 and an orchestra of 170, was a triumph.
